Google Business Profile vs. a Website: Do You Genuinely Need Both?

If you've already set up a Google Business Profile - the map pin, the reviews, the photos that show up when someone searches your business - it's a fair question: doesn't that already cover "being found online"? It covers more than people expect, but not everything, and the gap is worth understanding before you decide you don't need a website too.

What a Google Business Profile actually does well

It's free, it's genuinely powerful for local "near me" searches, and it's often the very first thing a nearby customer sees - your map pin, your rating, your hours, real photos, before they've clicked anything at all. For pure local discovery, it does its job better than almost anything else you could set up for free.

Where it genuinely falls short

A Business Profile is a fixed format Google controls, not a page you design. You get a name, a category, a short description, some photos, and reviews - there's no real room to explain what actually makes your business different, walk through your full service list, or show your work the way a real page can. It's a listing, not a pitch.

It's also not really yours in the way a website is. Google can change the format, the ranking factors, or the rules around what's allowed in your listing at any time, and you have no real say in any of it - the same "you don't own the platform" gap that applies to Instagram and WhatsApp too.

The part most people miss: they're built to work together

Every Google Business Profile has a "Website" button - and if you don't have one, that button either doesn't appear at all or quietly does nothing. Someone who liked what they saw on your profile and wanted to learn more, see your full range of services, or decide before messaging you has nowhere further to go. The profile gets them to notice you; the website is what lets them actually decide.

When a profile alone is genuinely enough

To be fair about it: a very small, purely walk-in local business - a single neighborhood shop with no real need to explain anything beyond "we're here and we're open" - can often get by on a strong Business Profile alone for a while. This isn't a universal rule that every business needs a website on day one. It's a real trade-off worth being honest about, not a scare tactic.

Where it stops being enough is the moment someone wants more than your location and hours before deciding to contact you - which, for most service businesses, is most of the time. If you're setting one up (or already have one and want a website to go with it), our Enhanced plan includes Google Business Profile setup free, or ask us on WhatsApp if you're not sure which situation you're actually in.
